Marian Pilgrimage through Fatima, Lourdes and Spain: Hand in Hand with Mary toward Jesus
Our Marian pilgrimage through Portugal, Spain and France will be much more than a trip through Europe: it will be an experience of faith, prayer and encounter with Jesus, guided by the love of the Virgin Mary.
We will embark on a journey with our feet and our hearts. We will visit some of Europe's most important Marian shrines on a route through Fatima (with arrival in Lisbon), Salamanca, Covadonga, Garabandal, Lourdes, Zaragoza (Our Lady of the Pillar) and Ávila, places that invite us to explore spirituality, history and the witness of faith more deeply.
We will walk as pilgrims, celebrate the Eucharist, pray the Rosary and share our faith. At each shrine, Mary will remind us of what matters most: her mission is to bring us closer to Jesus. Discover what we will experience at each shrine on our 2027 Marian pilgrimage to Fatima, Lourdes and Garabandal.

What does it mean to experience a Marian pilgrimage?
A Marian pilgrimage is an opportunity to step away from our routine for a few days and open our hearts to God. Beyond visiting churches and cities, the journey invites us to listen, give thanks, pray for those we love and discover how to live the Gospel in everyday life.
The Sanctuary of Fatima: an invitation to prayer and conversion
Our pilgrimage begins in Lisbon, with a panoramic tour of the city before traveling to Fatima. There we will arrive at the place where, in 1917, the Virgin appeared to three shepherd children: Lucia and Saints Francisco and Jacinta Marto. The Church recognized these apparitions in 1930.
We will arrive on October 13, the anniversary of the last apparition, and make our first visit to the Chapel of the Apparitions that same day. We will celebrate the Eucharist, visit the Basilicas of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Most Holy Trinity, and follow the Stations of the Cross through Valinhos to the shepherd children's homes in Aljustrel. In the evening, we will be able to take part in the Rosary and the torchlight procession.
Salamanca: faith, history and learning
In Salamanca, a UNESCO World Heritage city, we will take a guided tour of its historic center and its two cathedrals, the Old and the New. Its university, founded in 1218, is one of the oldest in Europe. We will have time to walk through the Plaza Mayor and give thanks for the journey so far before continuing toward northern Spain.
The Sanctuary of Covadonga: Asturias' Santina
We will visit Covadonga, a Marian shrine set in a landscape of great beauty. Our Lady of Covadonga, affectionately known as the Santina, is venerated there.
This place is linked to the story of Pelayo and the Battle of Covadonga, traditionally dated to the eighth century. Religious tradition attributes a special role in those events to the Virgin's intercession. As we enter the Holy Cave, we can present our own struggles and ask for the grace to trust in God even when the path seems uphill.
Garabandal: spirituality, history and discernment
Our itinerary will include San Sebastián de Garabandal, in Cantabria. It is important to note that the events that took place there between 1961 and 1965 have not been recognized as supernatural by the Church. We will therefore visit the place with respect, prudence and a spirit of prayer, without presenting those events as approved apparitions.
A pilgrimage also teaches us discernment: to place Christ at the center and calmly embrace the guidance of the Church.
The Sanctuary of Lourdes: prayer, hope and trust
In Lourdes, we will recall the Marian apparitions of 1858 to Saint Bernadette Soubirous. The Grotto of Massabielle, the water gesture, spaces for prayer and places associated with Bernadette's life await us there.
The experience of Lourdes invites us to bring our needs and those of our loved ones before God. Many pilgrims come praying for health; others seek comfort, peace or renewed faith. The Church has recognized some healings following rigorous evaluation processes. For many pilgrims, however, the deepest fruit is returning to God with a renewed heart.
We will also be able to share moments of communal prayer, such as the Rosary and the torchlight procession, and take part in other celebrations according to the sanctuary's schedule and our itinerary. Before Mary, we turn our gaze to Christ, present in the Eucharist.
The Basilica of the Pillar in Zaragoza: history and Marian tradition
We will visit Zaragoza and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. According to an ancient Christian tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to the Apostle James around the year 40, while she was still living in the Holy Land, to encourage him in his evangelizing mission. This tradition holds a special place in Spain's Marian devotion.
As we approach the Pillar, we can remember that faith also sustains us in times of weariness and difficulty. Like James, we too need encouragement to continue proclaiming Jesus and trusting in his presence.
Ávila: following in the footsteps of Saint Teresa of Jesus
Ávila awaits us with the living legacy of Saint Teresa of Jesus, a woman passionate about God, courageous in her faith and deeply in love with Jesus. We will explore the places that shaped her life and vocation, drawing inspiration from her prayer, her strength and her desire to live everything alongside the Lord.
In her hometown, we will recall the well-known Teresian prayer: “Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, all things pass away, God does not change; patience obtains all things; whoever has God lacks nothing: God alone suffices.” Her witness invites us to discover that the inner life also transforms the way we walk through the world.
Why go on a Marian pilgrimage through Europe?
Fatima (with arrival in Lisbon), Salamanca, Covadonga, Garabandal, Lourdes, Zaragoza and Ávila: each destination has its own history, beauty and particular way of inviting us to pray. Yet the heart of this Catholic pilgrimage is not only the place we reach; it is what God can do within us along the way.
Mary does not take Jesus' place: she leads us to him. And we find that center in the Eucharist because, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, the Eucharist is the “source and summit of the Christian life.”
To go on pilgrimage hand in hand with Mary is to learn to look to Jesus, entrust our lives to him and return home with a desire to live our faith more deeply.
